  1. Good product but resource hog on Thursday 5, 2009
I personally like this release of PSE. I was badly disappointed with 4.0 because it was a bit clunky. In this release Adobe fixed some of the bugs that were so annoying in PSE4, but in the process it must’ve added some new ones, because PSE5 eats memory and processor cycles for breakfast! I would discourage anyone with pc > 2 years old to buy this product: it will be VERY slow and will probably crash your machine if you do not have enough RAM (or it will hard-drive thrash like crazy!). As for the features I like are the “Levels” and “Curves” though they use a different nomenclature (to differentiate with the PRO version) they offer very similar functionality. I own the pro version for my business, but I’ll definitely be using this at home. It’s a good product, just don’t expect it to be snappy unless you have very current hardware.
  2. Windows XP-Home Edition on Thursday 5, 2009
Don’t attempt to use this program with the above system or you will have real problems stemming from the fact that Windows XP by default only provides for file sharing and Photoshop requires private folders which is not possible in talking to Dell. Adobe’s service leaves too much to be desired.
  3. Less Than Meets the Eye on Thursday 5, 2009
I don’t think that this software is much better than its predecessor, Photoshop Elements 4.0. They advertize that the software has a “curves” function, the powerful constast and color controlling tool in the full PS package. This was a big reason for my decision to purchase the software, But this PSE 5.0’s curves function is so truncated and limited that it is simply not a real curves function. Second, Adobe persists in its declination to include masking tools, which are the key to making layers really work. Third, for some reason, Adobe says that versions 4.0 and 5.0 can’t run at the same time. How foolish! Bottom line: PSE 5.0 continues to be a somewhat useful software, but not one to rush to purchase if you have PSE 4.0 or even one of the recent Corel offerings.
  4. PS Elements 5.0 Rocks on Thursday 5, 2009
I’m totally in love with this product and can’t get enough of it. It has so many amazing features. I use it for photo organization and scrapbooking and it’s just perfect. Now if they only had this product for the Mac, I would be so grateful!
  5. Why I enjoy Photoshop Elements 5 on Thursday 5, 2009
Having had and enjoying Photoshop Elements 2, the Elements 5 up grade was a great purchase. There are so many more things that the program has over Elements 2, that I find myself trying them all to see what they will do. Everytime I use the program, I find and learn something new! I’m delighted that I purchased it and as always, Adope makes great software.
  6. PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 5.0 FAILS on Thursday 5, 2009
Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 is less functional than Photoshop Elements 2.0. And Adobe service is rotten.
  7. So far so good! on Thursday 5, 2009
I like the Adobe Photoshop Elements so far. This is my first time with advanced Shotoshop. I like many of the effects I can make with it. I bet pros would do so well using it. It also has this feature that if you insert your memory card in your PC hub, it would load the pictures on to your PC in a nice simple way. I wouldn’t say it’s the most amazing photoshop, but its really really good for the price.!
  8. Powerful, Power-hungry Program on Thursday 5, 2009
I’m inclined to say that the Photoshop Organizer alone is worth a large percentage of the price of Elements 5.0 and it’s an aspect of this software’s capabilities about which I was surprised. The editing program of course is amazingly powerful but, as others have said in some detail, it takes awhile to learn—get a third party manual. I got my money’s worth when I discovered that some dust on my camera’s processor had left smudgy looking imperfections in the sky portion of some landscapes I’d taken—you know, the kind of photos that are difficult to redo—and the editor’s healing brush took care of them in seconds. Wow. I’m withholding a star for this product for two reasons: One, because Adobe designed it the way they apparently design everything—so that it consumes huge amounts of system resources and so that it runs slowly. My PC has an AMD dual core processor, 2GB RAM, 512 MB graphics card and Elements 5.0 exhibits rather sluggish performance in just about everything it does. (I am comparing it to other photo editing programs I’ve used.) I don’t recommend Elements for older, slower systems unless the user is patient and has no deadlines. Two, every time I plug ANY USB device into my PC Adobe assumes it’s a photo device and tries to upload photos. This wouldn’t be half as annoying as it is if Elements didn’t simultaneously cause a glitch in Windows Explorer so that it takes quite awhile for the system to recognize the USB device at all outside Elements. Why can’t Elements tell a camera from a TravelDrive? Anyone know a fix? ******* Update: I’m now using Elements 5.0 on a slightly different computer (specs above reflect this) and noticed today that Windows Task Manager says Elements Organizer and Editor with one photo open are using over 1 gigabyte of system memory!
  9. Great Editor on Thursday 5, 2009
Photoshop Elements 5.0 is a superlative product for the price. Editing is easy to do from cropping to enhancing images.
  10. It's the standard on Thursday 5, 2009
I find Photoshop to be non-intuitive and a resource-hog. However, Photoshop is the standard in photo-editting and if I want to get advice from another photographer, he/she will give it in Photoshop terms so I’m forced to buy this product.
  11. Adobe Photoshop El 5.0 on Thursday 5, 2009
After working with this for several weeks have found 5.0 very useful for post processing photos.
  12. continued improvement on Thursday 5, 2009
Adobe continues to make improvements to the Elements line which make it worthwhile to pay for the upgrade.
  13. Works great on Thursday 5, 2009
I like this product a lot. I can do all kinds of fixes to my photos – either quick or more advanced. I do, however, recommend getting the “missing manual” to help learn all the uses for Photoshop.
  14. Adobe delivers an excellent program for organizing and editing your photos. The only catch is that they do a mediocre job in explaining how to use the program to its fullest, which leaves you in one of two positions…either (1) experiment a lot with trial and error, or (2) buy a companion guide or manual to speed up the learning process [Kelby and Brundage have written some very good books]. Either route requires effort, but the program is certainly worth the effort.
  15. More than enough features on Thursday 5, 2009
Excellent photo editing tools for almost all requirements. One missing tool is an automated system for saving multiple photos at a file size small enough for the web.
  16. Hope you don't need support on Thursday 5, 2009
While I am sure the product does what it offers, this is the second version of Elemeents that I have not been able to load on my computer. That’s where the fun begins – Adobe’s support is dreadful. Their website is unusuable – other than constantly trying to sell you additional products and services – and they have no human support on weekends.
  17. I currently have PSE 2.0, and downloaded 5.0 to try it out. So far, it’s an excellent product and is worth the cost of upgrading. Some of the great new features (which may have been in versions 3 and 4) are the cookie cutter, frames, and THANKFULLY, strokes! I was very disappointed that 2.0 did not allow you to draw strokes around objects, but 5.0 has this. This version also gives you much more control over layer styles as well as more style, theme, and other artistic options. My only caveat to you is that you should have a lot of memory. Even with 1GB of RAM, the program can be slow to respond at times.
  18. WOW on Thursday 5, 2009
This was my first editing photo program that I purchased on a friend’s recomendation who is really into photo editing & photography. I was amazed at all the things it does. I played around with it and edited a few great photos of my kids (that had a few flaws), that I ended up using as our Chirismas card this year. From there I took a few photos of my 2 year old – edit a bit – they came out GREAT!, and realized I will never have to subject myself or my kids to the stressors at a JC Penny or Sears photo center for a great picture. This is an amazing product – and can’t wait to learn more of what it does.
  19. Stay with 4.0 on Thursday 5, 2009
This “newer” version of Elements is a waste of money. It does not have the most used features that 4.0 has. Undo, sharpen, brushes, save. Red eye works worse than ever. There’s no hard copy manuel and customer service is almost impossible to get through. Would not recommend!
  20. This world renown editor is the best when it comes to editing and managing your digital photos
  21. I bought this Photoshop Elements software to help boost my digital scrap booking hobby. Unfortunately, it is a bit over my head. Perhaps if you are already familiar with Adobe Photoshop, then this software would be a cinch. But, for me, it isn’t. I have spent more time trying to figure out how to use the Elements software versus having actually used it. If you are trying digital scrap booking for the first time, I recommend buying Scrapbook Factory Delux 3.0 version for less than 1/2 the cost of Photoshop Elements.
  22. This is the first version of PSE I’ve tried that includes the photo organizer. And I hope the last. The organizer, aside from often hanging up my Win XP machine and its 1 gig of ram, is worthless if you ever use any other app (which you will, given this one’s proclivity to do basic things, such as actually display your photos where you left them about half the time). Once you move, backup, delte or alter photos using any other app that actually does what it’s intended to do (such as Breezebrowser), PSE’s “link” to those files is severed, and don’t even think about the hours you’ll spend trying to “reconnect” them. I wound up with a fictional directory of PSE files of images that I had deleted or moved with Explorer or another program — and NO ability to even delete these ghost files, as far as I can tell, from the Organizer’s library listings. Organizer does a lot of whiz-bang things, such as create automatic web pages. But it’s worthless if it doesn’t do what an organizer should do — allow you easy access to, and ability to move and manipulate, your photo files. Highly disappointed Adobe would release something this flawed. That said, the editing tools are better than ever, IMHO. Use it as a photo editor, and leave your organizing to one of the many fine thumbnail browswer programs that actually work and don’t have to control your every move or thought.
  23. Finally, I can use my software on Thursday 5, 2009
This book made using Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 so easy. I couldn’t figure the software out on my own. Worth the money!!
  24. Photos better than ever on Thursday 5, 2009
I love Adobe Photoshop Elements 5. It is easy to use and makes such a difference in the quality of my printed photos. Editing is so much easier. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Photography.
  25. PhotoShop Elements is my favorite photo editor program. It does everything that I needed to do in editing my photos. I would recommend this software program to anyone who does not want to spend the many dollars for it’s parent, PhotoShop CS.
  26. Stripped of essential features on Thursday 5, 2009
I have used Photoshop products since their inception in the late 1980s, and am disappointed and frustrated to find this version of Elements stripped of features that have been a part of all Photoshop products until now. For example, the pull-out guides that can be dragged from rulers (a feature of even the simplest graphics programs) have been eliminated, apparently to try to force users to buy the full Photoshop program. Buying the full version (as I have for years) had already been my plan until I encountered this and other arm-twisters. Now I will look elsewhere for photo editing software.
  27. I agree with the positive reviews of PSE 5, but just wanted to warn anyone here that Adobe’s service is horrible. Expect to wait 10-20 minutes just to speak to anyone, even sales! I won’t go into the details as to why I had to call (LONG STORY!!!), but I will tell you that I used up almost all of my cellphone minutes over 3 nights of calls to adobe. And no, my problem (not with the software, was with the lost delivery) was never fixed. I ended up getting tired of them and just blowing 100 bucks. Once again, I love the software, but don’t like adobe. Just don’t let that stop you, it’s still THE photo editing program. Oh, and to anyone that bought 4.0 between Sept. 12 and sometime in December, Adobe has a free upgrade, ALL you have to do is call them. Check out the current specials on the website. The details are there. Don’t say that’s not helpful.
  28. Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 is easy to use without a book. You can quickly organize, catalog, backup and edit your photos without spending a lot of time reading books. Or you can purchase a book like The Missing Manual and get more into the detailed tools available within the product. Good product for quick photo touchups or if you want to spend more time tweaking the finer points of your photos.
  29. Adobe PS Elements 5.0 (older version) works nicely with XP and does function as advertised. It is worth the price.
  30. Photoshop Ele. 5.0 on Thursday 5, 2009
Have used PE 2.0 in the past. Recently decided to rejoin the digital editing age. Chose this product after reviewing many products including Lightroom, Aperture, Capture, Photoshop Cs and decided this offered the simplest methods for home editing. Also purchsed Classroom in a Book from Adobe and am tutoring myself. So far, so happy.
  31. Bought this to put on my Vista laptop. Have been using 2.0 which like most programs is not “Vista compatible”. I have enjoyed using the 5.0. It loaded without any snags or delays on my Vista – for which I am eternally grateful. It’s close enough to the 2.0 to feel comfortable, but of course many more options.
  32. Editing yes, Organizer no! on Thursday 5, 2009
I have used about every photo editing program on the market: MGI Photosuite, Picture It, JASC Paint Shop Pro, et al, and this one. This is an excellent photo editing program, but I can’t say I like the Organizer. My pictures were already well organized in folders by family members, friends and scenic places and I’m not sure I want to change anything. However, there are many good things about this program including the editing process and the on line tutorials. If your looking for a good photo editing program, don’t be put off by my 3 star rating. This program can do an excellent job at editing and creating unusual photos. Who knows? – after a while I may get to like the Organizer.
  33. Upgrade is worth it! on Thursday 5, 2009
If you’re new to PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS this is a great tool for digital scrapbooking. If you’re considering an upgrade, I’m happy with the added features. Some of the built-in embellishments are lame, but over-all function is great. Adobe’s photo organizer is a must if you have a lot of digital photos. Subscribe to the photoshop elements magazine, it’s the best tool to teach you how to get the most of your program.
  34. Revue of Elements 5.0 on Thursday 5, 2009
I have found this program uneccessarily complicated and tedious to manipulate. There are free programs which are far easier to operate, with features equal to all Elements offerings, for the average advanced user.
  35. Adobe Elements 5 on Thursday 5, 2009
Elements 5 is an amazing program. If I had only one program for photos, graphics, and designing, this would be the one. It even exports to PDF for publishers wanting to design fantastic book covers. John Crippen, photographer, writer, and web designer. Animal Portraits with the Digital Photography of John Crippen: Learning Photography with Animals Scenic Photography Using Examples from the California Central Coast: A Visual Guide to the Central Coast and Digital Photography
  36. Excellent on Thursday 5, 2009
Used all the time for all my digital pictures. Easy to use, great product.
  37. A little confusing, but on Thursday 5, 2009
I purchased a $25 OEM version here a couple of months ago. That means it came without a manual – but that’s OK as my PE1, 2 and 3 had manuals – and while some may think the Adobe manuals are fine, a good aftermarket version is much better. I chose PE5 over 6 as there have been some PC interface problems reported plus the gray boundaries are tough to see menus. And there are only very minor changes in V6, Then, best of all, V5 was $75 cheaper!! It’s a great photo processing program, especially for those that don’t need the complexity of full blown Photoshop CS3 but is taking me a while to get used to it after the earlier versions. There are some hidden items that I’m just starting to find, but have enjoyed working with it anyhow.
  38. Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 is one of those software packages with so much capability it becomes difficult to learn how to take advantage of its power. I’m moving from PhotoFinish 4.1 to this package and I’m finding the transition very difficult. Of course I’ve been using PhotoFinish since the beginning of computer time and therefore know my way around that program. For the last two weeks I’ve been struggling with lifting parts of one image to paste into another. When I can do it, the results are great. My problem is I’m never quite sure what I’ve done that works and what I’ve done which doesn’t work. Either I’m very dumb or the program is not very intuitive. I choose the latter. The “Help” function would be much more useful if it had a “Show Me” mode. One major stumbling block for me are the GUI’s selected for editing functions. They just don’t look like what I’m used to seeing for the intended function. The fill symbol, which is supposed to look like a pouring paint can, looks more like an inverted top hat at a 45 degree angle. The symbol for creating a blank shape is a rectangle with a doohickey slightly visible in the lower right hand corner. The cloning tool symbol is a rubber stamp. And so it goes. If you are saying, “Of course,” then my review is of little value to you. A very important capability for me is the ability to select portions of images to insert into other images. Photoshop highlights their Magic Selection Brush as being the tool which simplifies this task. I’m finding the “Magic Selection Brush” to be indeed very mystical. When I use it to mark a portion of an image I want to move to another layer the program picks all items in the image of approximately the same color. I’ve yet to discover how to set the sensitivity of the selection process. My computer has a Pentium 4 CPU, 1 gigabyte of RAM, and uses Windows XP Professional, SP2. This is important to know to understand what follows. A feature of the program I had to disable was that which searches for new images in my computer and/or attached camera. The DLL which performs this function used 99% of my CPU, thereby rendering my computer essentially useless. Once I eliminated apdproxy.exe from my startup file I regained control of my computer. Would I buy this package knowing what I now know? Yes, I think so only because I’m not sure there is anything else which would give me the editing power I seek at a price I consider reasonable. I WILL learn to use Photoshop Elements 5 and I WILL learn to love it (or at least not hate it).
  39. No hard copy manual on Thursday 5, 2009
I was disappointed to spend so much on APE 5 and receive no hard copy manual in the box. I called Adobe customer support and was asked what size the box was and was then told that there is no hard copy manual with APE 5 that is sold by resellers. The rep I spoke with must be misinformed, as I know people who bought APE 5 from Best Buy and Costco and got the hard copy manual. I was told I could purchase the manual from Adobe for $20 plus applicable tax and shipping. I told them no thanks, I would buy a 3rd party book instead and ordered the ‘Missing Manual’ book. That’s funny if you think about it. Besides the 38 page quick start guide, there IS a copy of the manual on the CD, so it isn’t like there is no documentation at all. I find those hard to work from, and one can definitely not carry a copy around for reading while on breaks or waiting for appointments, but it is better than having none at all. However, if I had known a version was available with a hard copy manual, I would purchased that version instead. Lesson learned. I miss the undo and redo buttons I had in version 3, but they may have thought those a little redundant since there is an undo history in the palette bin which serves the same purpose. As for the selection brush, it is still there, along with the magic selection brush. The sharpening tool and unsharp mask were moved (under Enhance instead of with the Filters) but they are still there too. Digital scrappers should like this version with the new Artwork palette where backgrounds, frames, graphics and shapes are stored. I added some of my own artwork by putting it in subfolders here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\artwork I don’t have enough in there yet to know if it slows the program down and so far it hasn’t caused any conflicts that I noticed. Third party styles must be put here instead of the elements\presets\styles folder as in previous versions: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Photo Creations\special effects\layer styles Once restarted, Elements will rebuild the cache and your styles will show up. I found that putting them into several smaller subfolders worked best, ie: all the gold together, metals, cutouts, etc. but you can name and group them however you like. But you must create at least one folder with a name. Otherwise, they will all show up with the bevels. There are some nice alignment tools added to this version. Layer styles can be edited more than in previous versions, shadows removed or the colors of the shadows changed quite easily within the styles editing box. I noticed that if I change the angle of a shadow on one layer, if there are shadows on other layers, they change so that they match. That’s all I can comment on right now as I have had this version only a few days. So far, so good, but I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 due to the lack of the hard copy manual in this package, and my not being thoroughly acquainted with this version yet.
  40. I have used 3 different photo editing software and they did basis fixes adequately, on the other hand Photoshop Elements 5.0 out did the same things and more at a far better quality. I decided to use the trial when restoring 40 year old baby pictures and then after 7 days of a 30 day trial the software was purchased. The Photoshop Elements has allowed me to remove heavy yellow ageing cast, repair torn areas, scratches and faded color. The process was easy and clearly explained when I needed help. It takes patients (not included in box) and tinkering to get the proper look, but it can be done. I’m adding the following Information because I was not sure if is was an add on to Photoshop or a stand alone application. You should be aware that Photoshop Elements will work without the much more expensive Photoshop, I believe that is geared to professional users
  41. Great Upgrade on Thursday 5, 2009
I had an older version of Photoshop Elements and recently upgraded to version 5.0. I’m thrilled with the improvements with editing and organizing my digital photo collection. Impressed with the new templates and layouts also.
  42. Crashed and burned on Thursday 5, 2009
When I tried to load the software, my hard drive crashed – computer guy coming tonight for a house call to try to restore……..
  43. It doesn’t take long to accumulate a large number of photos. I scanned in a large number of old slides and family photos that were deteriorating along with all the digital photos. It quickly became apparent that I would need tools to organize and retouch them. Photoshop elements provides very complete tools. I have used the previous versions (2,3,4) and version 5.0 adds some nice but not revolutionary improvements. The organizer allows you to attach keywords, modify date and time metadata (scanned photos only show scanning date), description text, and finally in version 5.0 location data (converted to longitute, latitude) with a map display. Once this metadata is added, the search capabilities are quite powerful. It is possible to find all photos with a people tag of “Dave” but exclude photos that have “Dave” taken with a date tag of “Christmas”. It is possible to search by filename, date range, keyword, absence of tags, collection etc. I like the collection feature which allows you to create a sequence of photos to stage into a slide show. Version 5.0 makes it easy to add a zoom and pan effect to slide shows which is widely used in professional productions (Ken Burns). The editing features are extensive. In version 5.0 they have enhanced the tonal adjustments when converting to grayscale. They have also added raw support as part of the product (it used to be a plugin). Files can be saved in .dng format (Adobe’s digital negative format). Overall more features than you can imagine. Why 4 stars? I ran into a bug on my system when I ran the editor. It would not allow me to save the edited file and gave me a vague “Program Error” message, not very useful. It may be a problem with my computer but who can tell? I was able to fix it by re-creating the preference files for the Organizer and the Editor (psa.prf and Photoshop Elements 5 Prefs.psp). Hopefully you will not see encounter this, it baffled me for some time.
  44. Stable, fast, intuitive on Thursday 5, 2009
Read a book on PhotoShop 6, and many of the functions are the same in Elements 5.0. I am a beginner, so I don’t need the latest bells/whistles. Made some very nice edits already, like taking a shot of a new Dad in the family with his day old child, and putting Dad’s face on the baby. Got a lot of laughs. Also took a before picture of our bathroom, and photo tiled it with the new tile layout. Very helpful in selecting the layout pattern, etc.
  45. From an amatuer on Thursday 5, 2009
I am still taking all the lessons I can find. The first chore of organizing photos seems excessively cumbersome for my purposes. I have always kept my pictures in folders that are event and/or people oriented. I hope I can master the editing because it seems much more complex than ealier editions and other Photo programs I have used. It certainly has a lot of power, but it seems more than I need, and uses a lot of RAM.
  46. What a Great Tool!! on Thursday 5, 2009
I’ve had this programme for about a week and a half now, and I am in love! This is a really great tool for organizing, but even more for creating and fixing images! I have played around and can’t believe all the filters, effects, fixes and correcting tools I have. I can make a photo look like a painting, I can crop it, spin it, layer it, cut and paste, tweak it, change the color, convert to black and white, add lighing effects, add texture, add borders, create a screan saver, make a CD cover…and the list goes on. I don’t know what I did before PhotoShop, and don’t care to remember. If you are looking to start organizing your collection, and are a photographer looking to start really working, effectively with your images. And really creating something special, this is the programme for you!

It has all the tools to match the novice to the experienced.
  48. I wish the manual had more detail, so that I could figure out how to utilize the cool features without having to take a special class or purchase and read another book. Right now I’m able to use it for some features, but I rarely open the program because a couple of free programs I found online can do the main image editing that I need. Great for those who are more experienced and do more with their photography. Save your money if you’re not (and just plan on using your photos for the typical uses like showing them to friends/relatives) or take the class/get more instruction. I plan on learning more though since I spent all that money on it and would like to make the most of it’s features.

Photoshop Elements is a great photo editing tool, however I would purchase the most current version.
  50. Old version, but a good one. on Thursday 5, 2009
If you are required to use this version because of an older OS on your computer, this was a good version. A great product for mainly focusing on organization.
